Here is the issue: Do incentives FOR charity undermine the value OF charity? for example: extra points on a test if you bring in parishable goods for charity federal income tax return pizza party for people who give the most etc. Thanks fo your inputs and help!

Hey all... just FYI, the "forum entry" that is being referred is located here: http://www.nintendoboy.com/apps/blog/show/429476-upcoming-to-nintendoboy-com- Anywayyy... hah, I'm glad Jinx brought this debate to the table. I'd like to qualify that perhaps both sides can be seen. I DO believe that it is morally wrong for incentives to be made to give to charities as it defeats the entire purpose of it. BUT. BUT. BUT! At the same time, even though it is unfortunate that some people need to be motivated to give, when you are on the receiving end of the charity, it doesn't really matter. If you are a homeless person on the street on a cold wintry night and you receive a warm jacket, you won't care how it was obtained, you are just happy that you can live through another cold night. If you lost a dog, you aren't just going to advertise the loss of your pet, but you will feel obligated to attach a reward so that your chances of finding the dog will be increased. It's not so much that it defeats it to the point where incentives can not be utilized in exchange for charitable actions, but unfortunately that's how it works in today's society. We are not motivated enough to give... now of course I can't speak for everyone, but you know, in the general sense. In somewhat of a conclusion, YES, incentives DO undermind the value of charity, as you put it, Jinx, but in return, chartible organizations can obtain what they need to continue their operations and do what they do best. Yeah, it's sad, but it has to be done! In other words, the end justifies the means.

ok now look. Here you are talking about how the "end jsutifies the means" (i HATE that saying no LOATH....LOOOOOOAAAATH) and here i am again telling you that youa re explaining it the right way with the wrong meaning. jsut because youa re GIVING something up FOR SOMETHING ELSE does NOT mean that it may be called charity. as i haev been brought up the meaning of charity may be linked to something called "tzdaka" but if you literally translate the hebrew it means RIGHTEOUSNESS. This means that the end does not JUSTIFY the means it only incites people to do good for their own self gain. there are people called tzadiks and there is only ONE...i will say this again ONE! tzadik alive today (pronounced tsa-deek). tis person is also known as a "righteous one" that is why in hebrew names mean everything for they cover what the subject or idea is made up of. if you look at my name it is supposed to means "leading" or "helper". AS you can see i am helping Jeff with this site soooo. OMG did I jsut prove myself right. Yes jeff i agree with you on the less fortunate on the other side not caring that means out of all the people giving only a select handful--meaning the ones who started the charities--are actually doing this for righteous reasons. In the end if the charity is not righteous the charity is undermined by the incentive being given making the charity not a charity from the ones are giving but from the ones who STARTED the charity.
